BQE rahab favors ‘park’ over historic buildings in Brooklyn Heights

The long-planned reconstruction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway through Brooklyn Heights may doom some historic old buildings in the landmarked neighborhood.

An Environmental Impact Statement will consider the use of eminent domain to seize Heights properties, rather than risk encroaching on the just-being-built Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The so-called park — which, despite a very parklike debut at Piers 1 and 6, is still reserved for substantial commercial and residential development — would have been a logical home for a temporary BQE rerouting and a permanent BQE widening, but highway planners are seemingly in cahoots with Brooklyn Bridge Park developers to protect the park’s commercial interests over the interests of Brooklyn Heights residents whose homes may be doomed .
